I felt unsuccessful whenever we had to complete a writing project. (You can read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/teachalicious.com\/?page_id=440\">my journey as a bilingual educator<\/a> here)<\/p><p>Then, I learned that writing with emergent bilinguals looks <b>different<\/b> than monolingual classrooms. Writing in the primary bilingual classroom can be <b>successful <\/b>AND it is important to not avoid it. It may seem that students are just &#8220;copying&#8221; but it helps students make a connection between what they say and what they write.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Shadows into the light two; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Sentence frames are helpful, but they should <\/span><b style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Shadows into the light two;\">not <\/b><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Shadows into the light two; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">be the only instructional strategy used in writing. Model how to start with a capital letter and leave space between words and punctuation. These are the steps I follow to dictate to my students:<\/p><ol><li>Choose a language feature to focus on based on the needs and ability of your students (example: punctuation)<\/li><li>Prepare a simple sentence to dictate to students (example: \u00bfTe mima tu mam\u00e1?).<\/li><li>Dictate sentence to students. Give time to students to attempt writing.<\/li><li>Teach mini lesson on chosen language features. Provide 3-5 examples.<\/li><li>Provide feedback on students&#8217; writing from step 3. Even my most reluctant students engage in speaking through this activity.
